Modern Ribbons of Color

Riblou Glade for 1949

First of all, I wish to thank my customers for their patronage and for
their favorable comments in regard to the quality of stock received and
service rendered. I shall be glad to know if at any time our service and
quality do not warrant your utmost satisfaction.

All our stock is hand cleaned, graded and washed. We make a special
effort to supply quality stock and a check with any of our customers will
convince you that your order will receive prompt service and just treat-
ment. They also know that any favorable changes in prices or discounts
offered by reputable growers is taken care of by overcount and extras.

Dip and Spray

Dip the bulbs before planting in one tablespoon of Lysol mixed thor-
oughly with one gallon of water. Let them soak for 3 hours immediately
preceding planting.

Spray your glads weekly after foliage is in the third leaf to kill thrips.
Two ounces of tartar emitic, six ounces of brown sugar. Mix well with
three gallons of water.

Discounts and Postage

On all retail orders our policy is and has been as noted below under
Terms and Conditions. To our knowledge all customers have been more
than satisfied. Since the current trend of most reputable cataloguers has
been to a bonus listed discount, we are glad to let all old or new custom-
ers, who wish, choose their own extras on the following basis. This will
in no way effect our liberal policies of the past. The discounts cannot be
eee in conjunction with any 1949 Introductions, wholesale prices or col-
ections.

On orders of $15.00 or less you can select 15% extra in bulbs of your
own choosing. On all orders over $15.00 select 20%. If postage is paid
with the order you will certainly get your value in additional extras.

Terms and Conditions

Minimum order $3.00. Orders are prepaid. Payment in full before
delivery of order. Please do not use currency for payment by mail.
Extra bulbs or overcount on all orders. My customers say this is more
satisfactory than a complicated discount and certainly more interesting.

Illinois State Department of Agriculture inspected flowers and bulbs.

Every precaution has been taken to send out only healthy bulbs true to
name but no guarantee of growth or responsibility of the crop is in-
cluded in the sale. A refund of the purchase price will be made on any
order found unsatisfactory upon receipt and promptly returned.

Purchasers should examine express shipments carefully so as to file
claim if received in damaged condition. All orders sent by mail at my
own risk.

Early orders are the best policy and please do not send any orders for
bulblets after April 1, 1948.

Order accepted subject to stock, and subject to being filled in numerical
sequence. This listing cancels all previously listed prices.

The following are my recollections of some of the newer varieties as
they bloomed this season. This is not a recommendation of the best va-
rieties or even an analysis of the new introductions. It is just a few
personal observations that come to mind as I alphabetically checked the
list. You are still the best judge of what performs best for your type of
growing and climatic conditions.

Atom, a striking miniature, with its color combinations. That is the
only reason it is one of the very few miniatures I grow. Black Cherry,
is certainly a black red and it grows beautifully. Cleo, is a novelty of
color. Crackerjack, a good straight growing orange commercial. Con-
nie G., the best cream I have ever grown. Dorothy Armstrong, is a com-
mercial purple of the future, very good in every way. Evangeline, a very
vigorous growing commercial light pink. Garden Gold, of purest rich
clear golden color. Lady Marian, Siboney, and Penelope, all beautiful lav-
enders, what a trio. Red Wing, the red of the future. Sherwood, a pur-
ple that is going places. Sparks is in with me and Voo Doo gets under
your skin.

The Air Express Glad

The florist, the commercial grower, and the fan’s
gladiolus. The beauty of this flower is best described
as a glistening light salmon pink, blending to a clear
cream yellow throat. Modern color qualities which give
instant appeal and assure its position in the gladiolus
family.

A healthy form sport of Picardy that grows tall and
opens 7 to 9 giant 6-inch ruffled florets. When cut tight-
ly in bud the florets will open to the tip. Grand Cham-
pion and Most Beautiful at Ottawa, Illinois, in 1945.
Best Recent Introduction and Reserve Champion at Ot-
tawa, Ontario, Canada, in 1946.

You will eventually grow Kelsey and Silver Wings
like you are now growing Leading Lady in quantity.

Quality Gladiolus

Cordova (Palmer, Gove)

Here is a variety that should make a grand early commercial. The
color is a beautiful distinctive rose salmon. Size up to nearly 5 inches.
Opens 8 plus always well placed blooms and a head up to 18 buds. Grows
tall with a slender willowy stem and rather thin foliage. A good propa-
gator. One of the very best early varieties.

Any size bulb $3.00 each.

Corouct (Palmer, Gove)

A medium size decorative lavender something on the order of Wedge-
wood yet different. A beautiful cool lavender or mauve pink that should
be very useful for arrangements and for florist’s use where beauty and
not size is appreciated. Grows about 3% feet tall. Opens up to 6 witha
total of 19 buds. Good propagator.

Any size bulb $3.00 each.

Fae (Palmer, Gove)

Here is one of the finest varieties that has been introduced in a long
time. It is white at the base and flushed rose up through the bloom and
with a white lip. A beautiful color with a hint of lavender. Beautifully
ruffed. Very showy and nice in every way. It is in the 400 class and
opens up to 10 at a time with 18-20 total buds. A tall strong grower and
heavy propagator. One of the best of the season. A great commercial
and exhibition variety.

Seguin (Palmer, Gove)

An early yellow that should make a good early commercial. A clear
medium yellow with no markings whatever. Blooms are large well open
in Picardy style. Opens 6-7 on a tall slender spike. Gets up to 5 feet tall.
Placement always good. Blooms in 75-80 days. A well balanced plant
and spike. Fine propagator.

Cyuthia (Graff )

A fine, clear yellow for
early cut flower purposes.

It is dependable and
straight. The color is a
beautiful clear medium yel-
low. The 4%” to 5” florets
are slightly recurved with a
little frilling on the edges.

Grows to a height of 55
inches with a flower head
of 26 inches. It opens 7 to
8 florets with 5 showing col-
or and opens very nicely
when cut in bud.

Germination and propaga-
gation are excellent. You
will be pleased with the cut-
ting qualities of Cynthia.
Stock is limited and will not
be available by the thousand
or the peck next year.

CYNTHIA

“Semptation (Kadel)

A radiant, self-purple glad which opens six 5” florets with six more
showing color on an 18-bud spike. The height of the blooming plant is
58 inches. Blooms in 75 to 80 days.

Placement, facing and attachment of florets are excellent. Bulblet
production and germination are likewise fine. Florets do not water spot
or burn in the field. Winner of the American Home Achievement Award
at the Maryland Show in 1947. Seedling of Blue Beauty and King Lear.

A tall growing early dark red with very
long flowerhead of 19 to 20 buds. Most
beautiful giant 51%” to 6” black red I have
grown.

CLEO (Youmans)

Beautifully ruffled light pink with a peach
red feather on cream ground. Firmly at-

CONNIE G. (Woods)

One of the most beautiful gladiolus I have
ever grown. Too bad that this variety was
not propagated for a few more years before
it was released. Now, I do not believe that
supply will keep up with demand although,
it has excellent germination and propaga-
tion qualities.

A beautiful large cream colored floret with
distinctive shape and ruffled, corrugated
petals with the texture and feel of a crisp
letture leaf. Blooms from all sizes, includ-
ing bulblets. One of the best 1948 intro-
ductions.

DOROTHY ARMSTRONG (Milo)

A beautiful shade of purple with no markings. Tall grower with 20
buds and 4%” blooms. A commercial purple of the future. Fine in every

way.

LADY MARIAN (White)

Looks like a new top commercial pink lavender. Beautiful, ruffled flor-

EVANGELINE (Palmer)

Large ruffled very light rose with a creamy yel-
low throat. Very tall grower, over 60 inches in
height with up to 12 very beautiful blooms open
at a time.

Evangeline has been a sensation at the shows
the past two years. With these records and test
reports I believe this variety is a good buy this
year and will certainly repay you in future beauty
and investment.

and any size bulb.

PENELOPE (Deam)

A mauve lavender that grows 4% to 5 feet tall
with a slender straight stem with 414” to 5” flor-
ets. Very good commercial color and certainly
had good growing qualities in our planting.

SHERWOOD (R. Pruitt)

Very tall beautifully ruffled large sized purple
glad. Looks to me like a definite improvement of
King Lear. Good propagator. You cannot go
wrong on this one.

EVANGELINE

SIBONEY (Allen)

A clear rosy lavender with giant blooms. A little more
rosy than Minstrel. One of the most beautiful gladiolus.

A pleasure to grow.

RED WING (Wright)

A vigorous strong-growing, commercial scarlet red
gladiolus with very good opening qualities when cut in
tight bud. It blooms saleable spikes from any size bulb
and bulblets produce good sized blooms. Very dark
green foliage that is disease resistant.

It has a very long flower head with 20 to 24 buds
with 8 to 10 open and 7 to 9 buds in color, combined
with plenty of cutting stem. Long flower head with
plenty of stem below the bottom floret are some of the
fine characteristics I like about Red Wing.

Mid-season lavender of the same shades as Minuet. A tall grower and

ALGONQUIN (Palmer)

Brilliant bright smooth scarlet with beautiful blooms on a tall straight

ANNAMAE (Pommert)

Very early chalk white with open plain florets. The early leading

Northwest Commercial.

The only small miniature gladiolus I list or grow because it is such a

BENGASI (Cave)

Beautiful light pink, which color deepens toward its edge and blends

_ One of the few true bronze varieties. Good for a novelty and change
in color. Large size florets.

BURMA (Palmer)

_ The best heavily ruffled deep rose red. Favored by everyone who sees
it in bloom.

Early, graceful spike of creamy white, medium size, beautifully ruffled

A light La France pink variety, formal exhibition type, with the ability

of Connecticut Yankee.

Early blooming salmon pink with a cherry blotch on the lower petal.

CHRISTINE (Cave)

Christine is a 6-inch, beautiful, plain petaled, recurved, white Glad

CONNECTICUT YANKEE (Schenetsky)
Needs no explanation to the exhibitor. A show Gladiolus of a light pink
color with a scarlet throat blotch. Beautiful large florets placed on a
stem in a formal manner and each spike is a floral display.

Giant, strong, tall growing, medium pink variety. Very popular with

CRACKERJACK (Allen)

Medium sized orange colored florets with some scarlet peppering in

CROWN ORCHID (Almey)

Plain wide open florets of deep lavender which open very well and

DAWN GLOW (Jack)

A light rose pink with massive 6-inch ruffled florets. Very much in
demand because of its beautiful ruffling and color.

DREAM GIRL (Krueger)

DUSTY MILLER (Elliot)

Smoky old-rose with distinctive cream lines. This glad is one of the

FABULUS (La Salle, Arenius)
A blotched variety that is very striking. Dark salmon with a yellow
blotch with a deep pink mark in the blotch. Grows good and looks well.

Bits., 10 for $1.00; 100 for $5.00.

FAY (Jack)

Very early salmon pink with a cream throat. A very good commercial
variety. Large size florets, nicely set on the spike.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE (Harris)

Beautiful easy growing white with nice ruffling. Grows tall with a
very good flower head with about 20 to 21 buds. Good floret attachment,
mid-season and good reproduction qualities will make it a coming quan-
tity grown glad.

FUSCHIA BELLE (Almey)
This year the Belle looked good to me in daylight. The color in my
estimation is still a dubonnet. Both shape and color are appealing.

GOLD DUST (Pfitzer)

Golden yellow just like its name. Good sized florets on a straight spike.
Older variety but very good because of its color.

GOLDEN ARROW (Pruitt, Bastian)

A true light yellow with 18 buds, 8 florets open, 6 showing color. Grows
60 inches in the field, always straight. Formal type; the 5% inch florets
are well placed and firmly attached to stem. Extremely healthy and vig-
orous, the foliage is very dark green. Germination and propagation are
excellent. Opens fine when cut tight and hot weather does not bother this
Glad. Blooms in 85 days.

GOLDEN BEAUTY (Coates)

Australia’s finest yellow. Large typical Australian gladiolus. Clear
color and good propagation.

Quality Gladiolus

GOLDEN STATE (Wheeler)

Probably one of the best exhibition yellows. Opens many florets and
has been winning on the show table. Very good propagator. Introduced
as a yellow Picardy. It is rated as one of the best yellows. Late mid-
season.

Large, 1 for 25c; Medium, 2 for 40c; Small, 2 for 25c.
Bulblets, 20 for 25c; 100 for $1.00.

GREAT LAKES (Kuhn)

A light blue which opens wide and produces large size bulbs from
bulblets. Bulblets are large and germinate very well.

GREEN MANTLE (Sisson)

Cream white with a green throat. Large sized florets. This variety
does not like dry weather and will grow a short spike if not irrigated.
It is a novelty because of its color.

Bulblets, 10 for 25c; 100 for $1.60.

HAWKEYE RED (Heaton)

Larger and wide opening red sport of Vagabond Prince. A good color
combined with good propagating qualities. Bulblets produce a large
plant. A real commercial medium red.

Bulblets, 100 for 25c.

HIAWATHA (Beardmore, Graff)

Hiawatha is a large pure self scarlet. A flash of beautiful color on a
wonderful formal spike that grows 60 inches in the field for me. Lightly
ruffled 5% inch florets with good substance placed right, on a spike of
22 buds. This looks like one of the winners in future scarlet competition.

HIGH FINANCE (Wilson)

Smoky orange-gray of giant size. Florets and flower head produce a
beautiful effect. Late season.

HUNTRESS (Jack)

A commercial lavender that has been accepted because of its early
large bloom and color. Everyone wants to grow it.

INTRUDER (Graff)

Giant flame or scarlet red. Bulbs are in heavy demand and stock is
limited. The moderate heavy spike grows to shoulder height and the
bulblets which are small produce a good sized bloom. You cannot make
a mistake on Intruder. It’s good and you will eventually grow this Glad.

IVY ROBERTSON (Barrett)

A very, very tall growing cream-pink with scarlet markings with very
long flower head. I like it.

JOURNEY’S END (Kadel)

The happy blend of Picardy and Pfitzer’s Triumph. A spectacular show
flower for the deep salmon pink class. Florets are usually as high as
broad, 6 inch, producing a mammoth effect. Winner of many awards.
You will like Journey’s End.

KING LEAR (Palmer)

Large, very ruffled, bright deep reddish-purple floret on good wiry,
graceful stems. One of the most popular purples.

LADRONE (Palmer, Gove)

This beautiful rose doree with yellow blotch looks to me like an im-
proved Beacon. A little larger in floret size and a very healthy grower
producing wonderful commercial spikes. Ladrone is a very good propa-
gator, producing many bulblets that germinate very well.

LADY ANNE (Buchanan).

One of two whites introduced in 1947. The other is Texas. This one
has a little frill on the edge of the petals. Grow them both and make your

MORNING STAR (Van Prooyen ’48)

This is a white 500 size Picardy sport. Robust grower like Leading

characteristics are similar to its parent. Very good propagator.

MOTHER KADEL (Kadel)

One of the best newer yellows. Medium sized, shapely, pure yellow

NEON (Young, Ruehr)

This Glad is a tuffy. Will try to bloom in a desert. A medium pink cut
flower, formal type Gladiolus. A 100 per cent cutter of very good 59-inch
right proportioned spikes with very good placing and heavy textured
wide-open florets. The florets measure 414 inches with 8 to 10 open and
7 showing color on a 20-bud spike. Not a giant but just right for the
floral trade. See cut on page 20.

This is a real royal purple Gladiolus with one narrow clear cream

and is excellent shipper. Never crooks, blooms in 80 days.

This really is a vigorous growing rascal. Bulblets bloom without an

Silver Wings needs no introduction as it has proved itself in the

Wax Model and Miss Wisconsin, two of Krueger’s best introductions.
Wax Model is a tall growing plant which blooms in early season from

detract from its beauty. A very good commercial variety.
